What are the limitations of teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that can help make your teeth appear brighter and whiter. It is a relatively simple and non-invasive treatment that can provide effective results in a short amount of time. However, like any other medical procedure, there are limitations to teeth whitening that one must be aware of before undergoing the treatment. Dr. Tina Subherwal and her team at Smile Studios of Redmond, Washington, can talk to you about what can–and cannot–be achieved using professional-strength teeth whitening services.
What are the limitations of teeth whitening at Smile Studios?
While teeth whitening effectively removes stains and discoloration, there are a few limitations to keep in mind. These include:
- Existing dental work. Teeth whitening products typically only work on your natural tooth enamel, so if you have any restorations such as crowns, veneers, or fillings on your front teeth, they may not whiten at the same rate as your natural teeth. This can result in an uneven or noticeable appearance
- Age and type of stains. Teeth whitening is the most effective on surface stains caused by food, drinks, and tobacco use. However, deeper stains from medications or trauma may not respond as well to treatment and should be evaluated further for other types of treatments, like porcelain veneers or composite resin bonding–both readily available at Smile Studios
- Sensitive teeth. Some people may experience sensitivity during or after a teeth whitening procedure. This can be managed with desensitizing agents, but those with severe sensitivity may not be suitable candidates for teeth whitening. Patients with sensitive teeth may experience more sensitivity than those who do not have sensitive teeth
- Gum recession. If your gums have receded and exposed the roots of your teeth, they may not respond well to teeth whitening. The roots are composed of a softer material than enamel and can become damaged or irritated by bleaching agents. We advise addressing these issues before considering cosmetic treatments such as teeth bleaching
- Pregnancy. While there is currently no conclusive evidence that teeth whitening can harm the fetus, it is generally recommended to avoid any elective dental procedures during pregnancy
