Dental Implants with Dr. Tina Subherwal
What is a dental implant?
Hi, I’m Dr. Tina Subherwal with Smile Studios in Redmond, Washington. Today, I’m going to be talking to you about dental implants.
Dental implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth.
Dental implants are a replacement for the tooth root, and on top of dental implants is where we place the crown that we see in the mouth.
How does the procedure work?
In an area where you’ve had a tooth removed or have a tooth missing, an artificial root in the form of a metal titanium post is placed underneath the gums in the jaw bone.
It sounds scary, but it’s a straightforward process, and it’s painless for the patient.
The implant or the artificial root is allowed to heal in the bone for three to four months to integrate into the surrounding bone and become firm.
Afterwhich, when we place the chewing force on the tooth on the implant, the implant remains stable.
How long does the procedure take?
The implant procedure takes about three to four months to complete once that implant is integrated into the jaw bone, then you get fitted for the crown that goes on top.
Once that fitting takes place, it takes about three weeks to get your crown back, and once you have the crown on, you have entirely replaced the tooth.
It’s a painless procedure, and patients are always glad they chose to replace their tooth with an implant that looks and functions like their teeth and gives them chewing power they wouldn’t have with a removable denture or even with a bridge.
Call us today and get those missing teeth replaced at Smile Studios.
Bridge Versus an Implant
Why should I consider a dental implant?
Implants serve to provide both a functional and cosmetic appearance of your natural teeth. Dental implants are made of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. They allow you to laugh, eat, and smile confidently and enjoy everyday activities without having to feel insecure about your smile.
What are the advantages of a dental implant over a bridge?
Dental implants have several advantages over a bridge. First, they are more permanent than bridges, and may likely be cheaper in the long-run than having to replace a bridge or dentures in the future. Secondly, they do not rely on the strength of the surrounding teeth for support like dentures or bridges. Consequently, they have longer longevity.
What should you expect if you decide to go with an implant?
We encourage you to make a consultation in our Redmond office with Dr. Tina to discuss whether a dental implant is right for you. She will review the x-rays you may have (and if you have not gotten, them we may get them). She will review the best options for your. Once you decide to go with the implant, depending on each situation, you may need a graft material placed in the area of the missing tooth. The graft allows for bone to grow to allow for the implant to hold. You will have to wait for 3-4 months to months to allow for the graft to mature. After the bone graft matures, we place the dental implant post. The implant post is made out of titanium steel and surgically embedded securely into the jawbone. The dental implant is allowed to integrate in the surrounding bone for few months. The final step is placement of the crown onto the dental implant. While this may take several months, a dental implant has increased strength and longevity compared to the bridge.
Patients regain their confidence with their smile with implants. Patients often comment implants feel like their natural teeth and allow them to lead a normal life like they had prior when they had all their natural teeth.
