Go Ahead—Add Dental Cleaning to the Spring Cleaning List

family dentistry redmond

We all make time for a semi-annual “spring cleaning” of our home. We at Smile Studios strongly encourage you to add a semi-annual comprehensive dental cleaning and examination to your spring-cleaning list. Doesn’t your smile deserve the same meticulous care that you give your home when you are deep cleaning? A smile is, of course, your first impression to the rest of the world. Why not treat it with the same care and attention?

You may already brush your teeth twice a day and floss, and therefore think you are already providing the best care of your teeth and your smile. However, the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), as well as the American Dental Association (ADA), recommends a comprehensive cleaning and examination at least twice a year. You may be wondering, why do I need to come in for a semi-annual visit if dental cleaning if you are already diligent in brushing and flossing.

The semi-annual dental cleaning gives a dental professional an opportunity to reinforce appropriate oral health, including proper brushing habits. This visit gives the dentist an opportunity to examine the mouth and take x-rays to diagnose any issues that may arise early (such as cavities, early tooth decay, address issues with your gums). Early detection will help minimize damage to the teeth and will help reduce costs before they become too problematic. The dentist can help locate areas in the mouth that you may need to pay special attention to and need immediate treatment or identify issues that may be monitored for future visits. At Smile Studios, our dental specialists also screen for oral cancer at every cleaning, which is crucial to diagnose early as cure rates can be 80-90% if caught early enough.

Some patients are reluctant to come in for their annual visit as they think the cleaning may hurt. However, we notice it’s the people who have neglected oral hygiene care that may experience some discomfort or sensitivity due to heavy plaque buildup or receding gums, or other dental issues. We can easily apply a topical anesthetic or local anesthetic to help alleviate the discomfort that patients may experience. Some patients are reluctant to come in because the cleaning “causes their gums to bleed.” It is not the cleaning that is the cause of bleeding gums, but lack of proper oral care with flossing and appropriate brushing which causes inflammation of the gums.

At Smile Studios, patients will receive diagnostic and preventive services from your dental professional as well as any needed educational information during the dental cleaning.

Diagnostic services include:

  • Review of medical history (including information on diabetes, heart disease, medications)
  • X-rays and examination of teeth to detect decay
  • Oral cancer examination and screening
  • Evaluation of gum tissue
  • Check of a patients’ bite

Preventive services include:

  • Removal of plaque and tartar
  • Fluoride application
  • Stain
  • Sealants
  • Polishing teeth, including fillings and crowns
  • Final flossing

At the end of the visit, the dental specialist will go over the proper method for tooth-brushing and flossing. We will provide recommendations for future treatment: when to return for follow-up hygiene treatment, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative options if any. Of course, we will provide tobacco-cessation counseling given the increased risk of oral cancer and other health concerns associated with tobacco use.

Seeing us at Smile Studios regularly will maintain good oral health. We look forward to caring for you and your loved ones. Please call 425-553-4480 to schedule a visit or click below to schedule online Book now
