What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
Missing teeth cause a multitude of problems. Not only can missing teeth reduce your confidence, but they can create serious oral health issues as well. Missing teeth can lead to changes in bite, which can result in other teeth failing.
Dental implants are the superior choice to replacement of a missing tooth. Dental implants benefits include improved ability to chew and taste food, increase stability of surrounding teeth, and give you the confidence to show your bright smile.
Despite all the benefits, patients are often reluctant to learn about implants due to cost. While implants do have higher one-time investment, the results are long-lasting compared with maintenance costs of bridges and dentures, and inconvenience of dentures. We encourage your to make a complimentary consultation visit with Smile Studios to discuss if an implant is the best choice for you.
What are Implants Made of?
Though they look like a screw, implants are much more sophisticated. They are made of bio-grade (biocompatible) titanium alloy. Given it is biocompatible, it fuses with the bone through a natural process called osseointegration. A crown on the implant is made of ceramic or porcelain, which is specifically designed to look and feel like your natural teeth.
What Should I Expect When Getting an Implant?
If you are thinking of finally doing something about your missing tooth, the first step is to contact Smile Studios for a complimentary consultation. We can discuss as a team the best approach to providing you with a healthy confident smile. Part of the treatment planning includes obtaining x-rays and a 3D CT scan. A 3-D CT scan allows the dentist to evaluate the quality and density of the bone in your jaw. We may also obtain an impression of your teeth to help design then treatment plan. If the scans show significant bone loss in the area of the missing teeth, you may need a grafting procedure to add bone. If you need grafting, we need to wait 3-6 months before placement of the implant to allow for natural bone to form on the graft material. After this time, the dental implants are placed in the jaw bone. We may leave the newly-placed implants undisturbed for several weeks to a few months to allow for surrounding bone and tissue to heal.
Depending on your situation, your newly-placed implants may be left undisturbed for several weeks to a few months while the surrounding bone and soft tissue heal, or you may leave with a with a provisional dental implant-supported bridge designed to last up to six months and give your jaw time to heal.
